Balan Mash, played by Mammootty is a family man, part of the traditional Kootu Kudumbam, a typical Kerela based joint family. Balan s family has a terrible omen attached to them, in the form of one male member from every generation going mad because of showing disrespect to a local Goddess. As his mentally unbalanced uncle passes, Balan becomes the target of speculation and fear about the omen being passed on to him. A nightmare leaves him further trapped, as the next madman in the family. When he is admitted to the asylum and is forced to act mad, the situation turns tragic due to the interference of others and the blind beliefs that assail the Indian mind.
