Amit, Biswajit and Madhumanti have been friends since college. Biswajit always had a corner for Madhumanti, but never let Madhumanti know about his feelings. Amit had a seven year old daughter, Pooja, when he got divorced. Madhumanti accepted Amit's marriage proposal just to take care of Pooja. But Pooja always held Madhumanti responsible for her parents' separation even though Madhumanti loves her unconditionally. This uneven journey of the mother-daughter relationship continued till Pooja got into the university and fell in love with her professor Siddhartha, who made Pooja realise how much Madhumanti loved her. Siddhartha, ever since he saw Madhumanti, seemed to be attracted to her. The reason behind this unfolds towards the climax of the film. In the end, all the relationships of motherhood, love and friendship in Madhumanti's life conclude in an unexpected turn of events

Sata resigns from his profession as a receptionist in search of a better living after their wedding. Sujata too decides to resign from her work since married women can no longer be employed as air hostesses. Unfortunately, just as she was about to take her last flight as an air hostess, she meets with a tragic air crash while taking off that leads to her death.

During the decade of 1970, a company decided to recruit 100 stuffs for their vacant positions. But the number of unemployed youth was so much that almost 30000 people applied for that job. Here Mrinal Sen neatly introduced some characters who actually portrayed the scenario in which they were going through. A journalist actually recorded all reports direct from applicants when they were queued up for the collection of forms. Some of them were victimized by black marketers, some families were facing labour problem due to company lockouts. But everybody was standing for the collection of form for those vacant positions. The pressure was increased day by day, at last the management had to call the police to tackle the situation. Suddenly few posters were seen on the sides of the roads and pavements. Those 30000 applicants became united. Some phone calls also conveyed by them. At last people organized an uprising and symbolically they protest against the system of ruling.

Once Dipankar came to know the whole matter and Shobhon (Tapas Pal), son of Binoykar, came out to search for Sima and her daughter. He came to Daulatgang and met Shyama (Debashree Roy) who was Sima s daughter. After some incidents, he came to know that Shyama and Sima were Dipankar s wife and daughter. They all together came back to Kolkata and started to live happily.

The story is as the film opens with a calling of rolls in Derozio's class in Hindu College. Calcutta and his pupils - each a celebrity in later life are introduced. Dukhinaranjan Mukherjee, Radhanath Sikdar, Ramgopal Ghosh, Pyarichand Mitra, K.M. Banerjee, Gobin Basak and others. Derozio teaches them the need of scientific doubt and patriotism. He preaches the ideas of the great French Revolution.A suttee Saraswati is rescued by Derozio's pupils, who take her straight to Derozio's residence where she finds shelter. Nahush Sharma, who was trying to burn her alive to take possession of her property, complains to Raja Radhakanta Dev, the undisputed leader of the Hindu community. Dev asks Derozio to return Saraswati. Derozio refuses point blank. Thereafter, Dev declares war against Derozio, because of his arrogance.Plots are laid, Hindu fanatics rouse mobs, the college is picketed, Derozio stoned. On suttee being abolished, Saraswati decides to go home, but is kidnapped by Nahush Sharma, who then tortures her son to make her confess publicly that Derozio has outraged her modesty. Meanwhile, Dukhina, Derozio's best pupil, and Emilia, Derozio's sister, develop a kind of juvenile love, which causes consternation in Hindu society. Dukhina is chained and whipped by his father, drugged and detained, but he breaks free and rejoins his master.But all these charges finally sway the Board of Governors of Hindu College, and Derozio is sacked. More, his pupils are forbidden to visit him. The tragedy lies in the fact that Dukhina, Derozio's favorite pupil, testifies against his master before the Board. Dukhina continues to live a wild life, abusing Derozio publicly. Derozio does not acknowledge defeat but sells all his books and furniture to publish the weekly. East India, and continues to mount attacks on Hindu superstition and British exploitation. He is publicly insulted in a dinner, when Saraswati is finally made to denounce him. But Derozio goes on fighting, Saraswati, having carried out her mission for the sake of her son, returns to find him dead.And Derozio is down with cholera, His pupils break College rules and gather by his side, while a mob burns his effigy outside. Rev. Hill requests him to make peace with God. Derozio replies. " But God is not proven".
