Shilalipi is the story of human relationships, human values and the meaning of human life. A poor widow from a decent family comes to Naren s house to take care of his house and father. Her son Raju becomes close to Naren s blind father Kamal Sen. Naren rapes the widow in an inebriated state and she is forced to commit suicide because of this disgrace. She leaves behind a letter with Kamal for Raju. Kamal gives the letter to Raju when he grows up. He is enraged to read about his mother s disgrace and when he questions Naren he dies of heart attack. Raju is shattered and holds himself responsible for Naren s death. Kamal tells him to start his life afresh. He marries and settles down. After living for few years peacefully he gets involved in a political tiff with Madhu Gupta and elderly man who had given him shelter and introduced him into politics. Madhu hires a young prostitute to trap Raju so that he withdraws his name from the election. Raju s young son falls for the girl and wants to settle down with her. Raju is shattered but then he realizes that nothing can be above human values. So, he leaves his political aspirations behind to live happily with his family.

Priyoranjan and Ratnakar are very good friends. They are almost like brothers. Everything was fine until Priyo ties the knots with Chirosree. They get married against their parents wish. They start their new family in poverty, but with a lot of passion. Whenever they needed something Ratnakar was always there to help them. They have a baby boy also, but the situation changes soon as Ratnakar and Chiorosree gets close to each other. Priyo could not stand their friendship as he starts to dislike Ratnakar and finally he fights with Chirosree regarding this issue. In the meantime, he degrades as a person also. He goes to the racecourse and lands up in jail. Chirosree with her own merit and able guidance of Ratnakar starts a new business of cosmetics and soon finds success. She also gets unlikely help from the bank officer to avail a loan. In the end though Priyo gets released from jail and finds his wife and son. Finally, with the help of that very person Ratnakar Priyo is reunited with his family and the film ends on a happy note.

It traces the life of a simple village man with a heart of gold. A simple man who acts in a theatre company saves a girl the plight of being married to an improper man who wants huge amounts of dowry much to the distress of the girl s widowed mother. The man is emotional, talented and very simple. He doesn t understand the complexities of the world so full of spiteful people with their own varied agenda. He keeps his wife happy no matter how poor they are. They go on to have an intelligent son and a beautiful daughter. The zamindar s young son was a boy with a golden heart and always wandered around helping his father s people, looking after their welfare and well-being in his own simple childish ways. The man and the zamindar s son develop a deep bond. The daughter is married off while the son is sent to the city for higher studies. The man comes to visit his son in his hostel who is embarrassed infront of his friends and introduces his father as his old servant . The man realizes it soon after and is left devastated. Years pass by and the daughter doesn t come to her maternal house and the man doesn t have permission to visit her either since the son-in-law s prestige will get hampered. Finally he goes only to find out his daughter been sold out in the flesh market by the filthy zamindar and his subjects. He sees life and accepts the fact that indeed society is ugly and life very un-fair.
