In a remote village near Theni, Thangapandi (Suryah) is the son of Malaisamy (Vijayakumar). The latter had once enjoyed huge wealth. His honest ways of living brings him admiration from the villagers. Thangapandi, a carefree youth, falls in love with Mayyakka (Meera Jasmine). Mayyakka is a poor woman, who earns her livelihood selling pots. Thangapandi gets acquainted with her and they resolve to get married. Enter Thangapandi's relative Rasaathi (Preethi Verma), who wants to marry him. Meanwhile Malaisamy, the man with a noble heart, promises his friend Sivalingam (Radha Ravi), a rich landlord in the village, that he would arrange for Thangapandi's wedding with his physically challenged daughter Vairam (Lakshana). Things go awry when Thangapandi tells about his love for Mayyakka to his family. Malaisamy dies without his last wish being fulfilled. All blame falls on Thangapandi. What will Thangapandi do now?

The story begins with Mangalasherry Neelakantan's (Mohanlal) son Karthikeyan (Mohanlal), as he ventures out to make money which ultimately makes him a liquor baron. The relationship between Neelakantan and Karthikeyan deteriorates, as the father does not approve of his son's money-making methods. Mundakkal Shekharan (Napoleon) comes into the picture again after spending a term in prison for killing one of Neelakantan's friends. He decides to finish the Mangalasherry family by confiscating the house which was kept as collateral for Bhanumathi's (Revathy) treatment. Bhanumathi passes away and Karthikeyan is now bent on taking revenge.\nNeelakantan loses his home and Karthikeyan ventures out in an attempt to reclaim his ancestral home. In the meantime, Karthikeyan abducts Shekharan's daughter Janaki (Vasundhara Das) in an attempt to blackmail him (Shekharan), during which they fall in love with each other. The remainder of the movie is about how Karthikeyan manages to get his ancestral home back while Shekharan's nephew Mundakkal Rajendran (Vijayaraghavan) makes attempts to kill Karthikeyan, but instead kills Neelakantan by lighting him on fire and gets killed by Neelakantan after a knife throw which decapitates Rajendran. Karthikeyan, now infuriated, goes to kill Shekaran by burning him. But Warrier stops him and brings him back. Karthikeyan becomes the head of his home and the IPS officer gives Janaki back to him.

The movie narrates the story of Appu (Mammootty), an elder brother who sacrifices his life for the younger one, an often repeated theme seen in Malayalam movies. Appu, M.D. of Leela Group of companies, a self-made businessman. Appu is a workaholic but a family man. He is married to Ashwathi (Mohini). Appu's father Pappettan (Innocent) had a humble beginning as a porter. Appu's brother Hari (Indrajith) took his MBA from England and he is married to Revathy (Gopika). All these people stay together as a joint family. Appu has many enemies in the business field and Sivan (Sai Kumar), the M.D. of Bharath Motors, who wants to destroy Leela Group. Sivan tries to influence Hari through his secretary Veni (Sindhu Menon) and her lover Deepak (Riyaz Khan). Hari has already been creating problems at the office as well as at home but Appu tolerates it. The story takes a turn with the accidental death of Deepak which was actually committed by Hari. In order to save his brother's life, Appu confesses to the murder. Rest of the movie deals with Sivan's attempt to take over Leela Group and how Appu takes revenge as well as the agony associated with it.
