Dwarkanath and his wife were separated from their child, a son named Shankar when they attended the Khumbh Mela in Central India. Years later they are still awaiting his arrival. Notorious con-man and gangster, Sunderdas, comes to know of this, and hires a look-alike named Kundanlal, who meets with Dwarkananth, and is accepted immediately. Sundedas wants to use Kundanlal as a tool to get money from the wealthy Dwarkanath, but Kundanlal refuses to do so. As a result, Sunderdas exposes Kundanlal and hires another look-alike to take his place as the missing son.

Suresh, Son of Swarupchand a cunning and greedy businessman of Bombay is a heart and soul pursuer of Art and avoids business like anything. Hiralal, a Mill owner and a businessman of Bombay loves money more than his only beautiful daughter Malti. He has been postponing her marriage for want of suitable bridegroom who does not love money. Now when he learns that Suresh, son of one of his sub-agents, is an honest and kicks money like anything, he decides to marry Malti with Suresh. He sends a notice to Swarupchand to pay off the old debts within a very short period of time. In the absence of any solution, Suresh has to go to Delhi to auction the house of Prakashchandra to pay off the debt of Hiralal. He meets his dream beauty in Lata, who is daughter of Prakashchndra the owner of the house to be auctioned. They get married.Meanwhile, Swarupchand goes to Hirala regarding the extension of the time limit and Hirala proposes marriage of Suresh and Malti in consideration of millions of rupees, cars and bungalows, but all after his death. Malti is in love with Romesh but her father destroys his full life. Suresh adopted a diamond cuts policy and succeeds in his mission of art with glorious triumph. The fathers felt ashamed while Suresh got Lata and Romesh got Malti.

Kamal Mehra (Sudesh Kumar) lives in the village with his mother Shanta Mehra (Lalita Pawar) and younger sister, Sharda (Rajshree). They are poor and his mother has to mortgage her house in the village in order to send Kamal to the city for further education. She expects him to pay off the mortgage once he gets a job. Kamal gets a job and returns to the village with a wife Mona (Shyama), who is considered too modern for the village. When Kamal returns to the city, he stops sending money to his family. The mother and daughter leave for the city when they are informed that Kamal is not well. They are treated badly by Mona, who with her spendthrift habits gets into arguments with Kamal. When Kamal leaves for a job outside the city, Mona has Shanta and Sharda thrown out of the house.\n\nWandering on the streets, Shanta and Sharda collide with Kumar's (Manoj Kumar) car, who takes them to his home. Kamal is an employee of Kumar, but the fact is unknown to mother and daughter. Kumar and Sharda start liking each other and he insists that they stay at his place till the mother recovers. When Kamal returns home, he is upset to see his mother and sister missing. He leaves some money he is carrying for his employer with Mona, and goes off to the village to look for them, but is unable to find them. Mona spends three-fourths of the money Kamal had left in her care, and he has to find a way to return the money. Finally, Kamal unites with his mother and sister; Mona has learned her lesson from her errant ways, and Kumar and Sharda get married.\n\nThere is a sub-plot in the form of Kamal and Mona's neighbours; one is Sunder (Mehmood) and his wife Geeta (Savitri), who is shown as the traditional wife in comparison to Mona. Another neighbour is Jackson (Johnny Walker), who has left his wife Ganga (Minu Mumtaz) in the village.
