Kamal Mehra (Sudesh Kumar) lives in the village with his mother Shanta Mehra (Lalita Pawar) and younger sister, Sharda (Rajshree). They are poor and his mother has to mortgage her house in the village in order to send Kamal to the city for further education. She expects him to pay off the mortgage once he gets a job. Kamal gets a job and returns to the village with a wife Mona (Shyama), who is considered too modern for the village. When Kamal returns to the city, he stops sending money to his family. The mother and daughter leave for the city when they are informed that Kamal is not well. They are treated badly by Mona, who with her spendthrift habits gets into arguments with Kamal. When Kamal leaves for a job outside the city, Mona has Shanta and Sharda thrown out of the house.\n\nWandering on the streets, Shanta and Sharda collide with Kumar's (Manoj Kumar) car, who takes them to his home. Kamal is an employee of Kumar, but the fact is unknown to mother and daughter. Kumar and Sharda start liking each other and he insists that they stay at his place till the mother recovers. When Kamal returns home, he is upset to see his mother and sister missing. He leaves some money he is carrying for his employer with Mona, and goes off to the village to look for them, but is unable to find them. Mona spends three-fourths of the money Kamal had left in her care, and he has to find a way to return the money. Finally, Kamal unites with his mother and sister; Mona has learned her lesson from her errant ways, and Kumar and Sharda get married.\n\nThere is a sub-plot in the form of Kamal and Mona's neighbours; one is Sunder (Mehmood) and his wife Geeta (Savitri), who is shown as the traditional wife in comparison to Mona. Another neighbour is Jackson (Johnny Walker), who has left his wife Ganga (Minu Mumtaz) in the village. Bhimkanta, the night guard of a government office commits suicide leaving behind his pregnant wife and children in a miserable condition. His wife labanya writes to his office asking for his dues. Bhim s friend Dashu takes up the responsibility of going to the office on Labanya s behalf but the office in question is a government one and the trouble starts thereon. Nobody seems to have any interest about work, nothing seems to move, and nobody lends an ear to Bhim s repeated appeals. Red tapism and politics only adds to the woes of Dashu who goes to all directions like a shuttlecock as everybody passes the buck. Years go by but Bhim s file rots away unsolved as the insensitive employees keep themselves busy with lottery, newspaper, saree business, and soccer games. At some point of time, devastated Dashu loses his mental balance. An officer rapes Labanya and she is forced to resort to prostitution. Her views change and all her expectations vanish. That is why when she ultimately receives the paycheck she tears it and throws it away.

Soon Pooja falls for Raja's charms. When Raja gets to know about all these, he cannot refuse Pooja because he feels for the dying girl. So he decides to keep a fa ade but Sumi comes back into Raja's life and when she comes to know about Pooja she misunderstands again. Her godfather Vikram comes to kill Raja but in the end the confusions get cleared. The movie ends on a somewhat tragic note as Pooja dies, thus paving the way for Raja and Sumi to reunite.

Three old retired men, Nabin, Nagen, and Naren are the best of friends. Two of them are widowers and the other, childless. Every day when they go for a morning walk, they discuss a lot of things. One of them Nabin still believes that the elderly people still have a lot to contribute to society and even to themselves as they can keep themselves occupied and live life to the fullest as all is not lost. They decide to revive a tea stall which had shut down (owned by Mrinmoy, student of Nabin) and start things on a grand scale. After a month's operations, it is seen that the stall is functioning well with a profit. There are a couple of hiccups along the way, but things are settled soon. Mrinmoy decides to help his cousin in his business and decides to go away, but is prevented from doing so by the three old men. Mrinmoy and Debalina (Nabin's tenant's daughter who he is very close to) decide to run a tutorial from Nabin's house.

"The Chief labour officer of a private steel company in Barrackpur senses corruption in the management. An idealist he resigns and is murdered. The secretary of the trade union, Probir gets to know of it and is murdered. His comrade Bijan manages to escape and absconds. Nirupama, the sister, who silently cherishes Bijan, along with Sandipan, a reporter, tracks down the hired gang of killers, which include Sital, the goal keeper in a smalltime football team. Sital reveals that they had been lured with the promise of a job. But the promises were not kept and sital wishes to disown his past. Meanwhile, Bijan has made good as a salesman in Nasik and returns to Calcutta as a changed man. His values had been eroded by time and success. He tries to justify his desertion of his earlier convictions, but fails to convince Nirupama. He wants a settled married life with Nirupama. She still clings to the ideals of her dead brother. But confusion and desperation forces Nirupama to accept his proposal. On the date of marriage, Sandipan is found dead in mysterious circumstances. Confused, Nirupama wants to postpone the marriage. Quarrels follow and Nirupama realises that the void between them is too wide to be bridged. The rift, however, forces a helpless girl to the threshold of self awareness. She realises that she, The film ends with Niupama beginning the struggle all by herself.
