The movie begins at Pachai Theevu, ruled by a mighty king (Narasimha Raju). His son and prince Jagathalapradhapan (Raja) is a valourous youth who sets out on a mission to capture pirates in the sea. He lands at Sangu Theevu, where the head of the sea pirates Alai Kallan lives. Jagathalapradhapan comes across Mohini (Namitha), who belong to the local fishermen community in the island. Romance blossom between them. Jagathalapradhapan manages to nab Alai Kallan and decides to return to his country. He promises Mohini that he would bring his parents to arrange for their wedding. However the King and his wife Mangayarkarasi (Yuvarani) arranges for their son's marriage with a princess Azhagu Nachiyar (Nila). Jagathalapradhapan tries hard to convince his parents that he would marry only Mohini. To put an end to the problem, the king and his wife hatch a conspiracy and bump off Mohini. Enters a cruel tantrik (Kota Sreenivasa Rao), who uses the feud between Jagathalapradhapan and Alai Kallan and plans to kill Jagathalapradhapan and thereby get the ultimate power to rule the world. But all his plans are altered when Mohini's spirit comes back to earth. Eventually it is a clash between the two - the fight between the good and evil."

Sapna Aggarwal lives a middle-class life in Delhi with her parents. She leaves home to re-locate to Bombay to purse a career as a Bollywood actress. She meets with several film producers, most want to either make her their mistress or have a sexual relationship with her. She starts to attend movie shoots and that's where she meets with photographer Sunil Verma, falls in love with him, and moves in with him in his apartment, much to the chagrin of her parents who refuse to have to do anything with her. Through Sunil she meets Film Producer, Saxena, who offers to sign her as a leading lady with Bollywood leading man, Karan, which Sapna accepts. Shortly thereafter Sunil telephones Bandra Police Station and informs Inspector Tyagi that Sapna has killed herself. Inspector Tyagi and the Police Commissioner arrive to investigate, find the dead body, as well as a suicide note indicating that Sapna was pregnant, was depressed, and had killed herself. The Police refuse to believe this, start their investigation and question a number of suspects including Ranjeet Hiranand, who had attempted to molest Sapna; Saxena who wanted a sexual relationship with her; Karan who wanted her to get intimate with him; Karan's Agent, Bindoo, who wanted Sapna to sleep with Financer, Kishan; Sunil Verma himself; Actress Kalpana who felt threatened that Sapna was going to take over her place with Karan and other film projects; Dolly, a Prostitute, who is now trying to make it big in Bollywood. The question remains will the Police make any headway or will they be forced to close this file as a 'suicide death'.

The second wife of kind-hearted and generous Amirchand Bhargav is Durgadevi Bhargav (Nadira), who is exactly the opposite of her late husband. She rules over her household, along with her brother, Makhanlal (Madan Puri), with an iron hand, and also over her step-daughter, Shanti (Vidya Sinha), who she treats worse than her servants. Due to her brutality, there is always a dearth of servants in her household, and hence most of the work must be done by Shanti. Her other daughter is Roopa (Moushumi Chatterjee), who is bad-tempered and spoiled. When a former employee of Amirchand, Ratanlal (Shreeram Lagoo) approaches Durgadevi for marrying her two sons to her two daughters, she humiliates him and turns him away. Unperturbed by this, he asks the assistance of his two sons, Ram (Sanjeev Kumar) and Laxman (Shashi Kapoor), so that the marriages can take place, and at the same time, Durgadevi and Makhanlal be taught a lesson. Both the sons readily agree to do this, and Ram goes to Durgadevi household as a servant to woo Shanti; while Laxman poses as a wealthy playboy to woo Roopa. But Makhanlal and his wife, Jwala (Shashikala) want Roopa to marry their jailbird son, Chander (Ranjeet), and will not stop at anything, including abducting Durgadevi herself, to pave their way to wealth.
