This story revolves around the contemporary fights between the bangal and ghoti in 50's West bengal. Just after the partition, refugees were coming from east-Pakistan-they are bangal. The old residents of West bengal are ghatis. Both are bangali but there are some differences in pronounciations, in culture and also in ritiuals. Two families start to stay as neighbours. One of them is ghati family, Harimohan is their only casing member. He, his wife, son Chanchal and little girl Rini are his family members. In the opposite house, there are Shibapada his wife, son Naru, elder sister Joshoba, Shibada's brother-in law Nepal and Shibapada's orphan niece Pramila. Chanchal teaches Promila as a private tutor. Hasu and Rini play together happily, but the other male members of both the family often fight. They fight for everything, for football-match, for an iron machine or something like that. "Bhutnath comes to Kolkata in search for a job and starts living with a devotional man named Brojorakhal. Subinoy Babu s daughter Jaba shares a bitther sweet relationship with Bhutnath. Brojorakhal introduces Bhutnath to the youngest bahu of the zamindari household where he was employed. He calls her bouthan and brings for her a box of sindur as per her request. It is now where Bhutnath gets a chance to look at the lives of the zamindars closely. They lived a brash lifestyle, splurged, enjoyed life to the fullest and never cared for their wives. Bhutnath witnesses an instance where his bouthan pleads her husband to not go anywhere and he replies in return stating he will only stay back if she sings, dances and makes him drink. Bouthan requests Bhutnath to bring alcohol for her and he implies. In her mad attempt to keep her husband by her, she gets addicted to alcohol. Bit by bit the zamindars lose their estates, money and consequently power. One day when Bouthan and Bhutnath are on their way to the mandir, a group of people attack them and knock Bhutnath unconscious. When he gets back his conscience, he does not find Bouthan.
