Vijay (Aasad MIrza) is a young boy who is molested by a prostitute when he is forcibly taken to the red-light area by his school friends. He escapes from there but the molestation leaves him so traumatized that he develops fear and his affects his interaction with girls. His father (Aditya Raj Kapoor) meets a bold and beautiful girl, Sarah Jones (Nazia Hussain), who tells him that she can erase the trauma from his son's life. The father promises to pay her the hefty fee she demands. Sarah Jones now enters Vijay's life and, slowly but surely, she makes him comfortable in the company of a girl something which wasn't the case because of Vijay's traumatic past. What's more, as Vijay and Sarah Jones keep meeting more often, she with a desire to fulfill her contract with Vijay's father, the two youngsters end up falling in love with one another. Once Sarah Jones has completed her part of the contract, Vijay's father pays her off. What happens then? Does the father accept the fact that his son and Sarah are in love? Does he ever know this fact? Does he get Sarah and his married? Or does Sarah walk out of Vijay's life? In short, do the lovers ever meet or never meet? If they do meet, how do they meet? Tapasya - meaning penance is the story of Indu, eldest child of Prof Chandrakant Sinha, who takes on the responsibility of rearing her younger siblings, Vinod, Madhu and the youngest sister. Indu is the breadwinner of the family and acts as both father and mother to the children. The family doctor, young Sagar Verma who treated Chandrakant through his terminal illness falls in love with Indu, which is reciprocated. Being the only son of his widowed mother brings expectations and Indu is expected to take on the responsibility of managing the affairs of their palatial home, giving up her siblings and her parental home. This is not possible for Indu, who is willing to sacrifice her own love and happiness at the altar for her brother and sisters. It is only when the children are settled in their own homes that Indu can think for herself. Sagar in the meantime has handed over his clinic to a locum and left without any forwarding address or informing anyone of his return date. Now that Indu is free, where is Sagar? Has he also given up on Indu as her siblings have and left her alone in her twilight years? Does Indu have any happiness in store for her, or is her life a penance Tapasya at the altar of responsibility.

Colonel Sahab is a doctor in a psychiatry ward and Nurse Radha (Waheeda Rahman) is heart-broken after a civilian patient, Dev Kumar (Dharmendra), whom she cared for, pouring out her love and affection, leaves the hospital, as she had been unable to keep her heart separate from her professional work and had fallen in love with her patient. Next Arun Choudury (Rajesh Khanna), a writer and poet enters as a patient, suffering acute mania after being rejected by his lover, Sulekha. After refusing to take his care, Radha relents and starts nursing him. In between while caring for Arun she reminisces her past and tells a story of how she took care of injured brave army soldiers when she was posted in Laddakh during the Sino-Indian war of 1962.Gradually Arun gets cured by the love of Nurse Radha, who yet again falls hopelessly in love with her patient. Unable to hide from the truth yet unable to face it, Radha herself goes insane and is admitted to the same clinic. Arun, promises to wait for her until she recovers, finding no other options that he could choose to make her better again.

Fifty years ago, Kundanlal was murdered and his wife and child vanished at the haunted bungalow surrounded by a jungle in the outskirts of Bombay. In the present, three brothers are living in the bungalow, who are Kundanlal's nephews. They are Shyamlal (Nazir Hussain), Ramlal (Nana Palsikar) and Ramu. On the eve of Ramlal's daughter, Rekha's (Tanuja) return from London, Ramlal is killed in a car accident which is suspected as murder. The suspicion is reinforced when Ramu is found hanging in his bedroom on the same night. Postmortem reports claim he was murdered before being hanged. Shyamlal and Rekha move out of the bungalow to their home in the city. However Rekha receives threatening phone calls about her death. She meets Mohan Kumar (Mehmood), the president of a local youth club, when he defeats her in a music competition. She soon confides to Mohan about the phone calls and Mohan begins to investigate into the calls. Will they find out what happened?

When Gajendra finds out, he is enraged and attempts to beat the stuffing out of the person he thinks is his brother-in-law, but Shyamrao refuses to be abused or beaten, and all of a sudden things start changing in the household as well as in the community. It is not long before Gajendra finds out about the truth, and plans an ugly death for Shyamrao, and all those opposed to him.
