A story of a young girl in pursuit of her dream of becoming big in the fashion industry, Gul comes to Mumbai from Jaiper to joins Vivek's company. Soon, she complains to him about Adi, her senior, who seeks sexual favours from her for accepting her design submissions. This is her way of getting back at Adi, with whom she had to sleep with before. She soon becomes Vivek's blue-eyed employee and is promoted, but stabs him in the back when she gets a far more lucrative job offer from his competitor, Ravi Bajaj. Before long, she ditches Ravi Bajaj too to join Xavier. Gul's mother, Shobha, always reminds Gul to maintain a diary to record her day-to-day events, as she feels it would serve as a mirror to her life. Gul obliges, but she is soon tired of writing in it due her consequential decisions in life, as well as due to feeling terribly let down by Karan, her boyfriend in Jaipur, and her two friends in Mumbai, Carol and Pia.

A journalist is shot to death at the doorstep of Shanti, also a journalist, who swears to bring the culprit Vishtar Nath to book. She subsequently files a report at the local police station following which her house is searched and drugs are found. She is arrested but later released after an honest police inspector Vikram Singh, learns that the drugs were planted in her house by a police constable. One night Shanti is molested but is saved in the nick of time by a young man Shankar. Shankar comes across evidence that may implicate Vishtar, and he takes it to Assistant Commissioner of Police Rathod. What Shankar does not know is that that he has opened up a Pandoras Box that will endanger his life, as well as the life of his girlfriend, Vikram and Shanti.

Lenny (Maia Sethna) is an eight-year-old Parsee girl who is growing up rich in pre-partition Lahore in 1947. Lenny travels daily to the nearby Queens Gardens with her beautiful Ayah (Nanny- Nandita Das), a young Hindu woman with the kind of curves and smile that ensures a constant supply of eager male suitors. It is an entirely pleasing world peopled by her beloved Ayah, Imam Din, the genial cook (Kulbhushan Kharbhanda), by Dil Navaz (Aamir Khan) the Ice Candy Man, a rogue who is Lenny's hero, Hasan the Masseur (Rahul Khanna) who invents oils made from pearl dust and fish eggs and also by her precocious cousin Adi. Outside this secure world, the searing process of splitting British India into independent India and Pakistan is about to begin and Ayaah will find herself caught in the tumultous love of two men and in the waves of nationali politics.
