But her overprotective mother assumes that she is in love with Sachin and provokes her to tell a lie that she loves Sachin. She convinces Sachin also to tell the same lie and help her unite her parents. They run away with the help of Sachin's friends and stay somewhere away from home. Slowly Sushma too starts falling in love with Sachin. One day, an advocate Gopi (Mammootty) comes to see them and agrees to help them. He tells Sachin the truth that Sushmas father is dying of some bone marrow disease and his last wish is to see his daughter married to the guy whom he has selected. So he hands over Sushma to her mother. The story is told in a flashback when Sachin is on his way to attend his lovers marriage as he tells his past to the co-passengers on a ferryboat who gets hooked on to his love story. Pallavoor Devanarayana Pothuval aka Devan (Mammootty) who is a talented drummer. People flock to the festivals just to see him play the drums with utmost devotion. His father opposes his relationship with a girl belonging to a lower caste and forces him to marry a girl of his choice Vasundhara (Sangeetha). Unable to bear his decision she commits suicide. He leads a very glum life with Vasundhara though she loves him and takes good care of him. He gets injured while trying to save his teacher s daughter from some miscreants and is taken to an Ayurvedic hospital. Mezhathoor Vaidyamatam Nampoothiri s (N F Varghese) granddaughter Seethalakshmi (Raasi) who falls in love with him so the doctor asks him to marry her. He refuses and goes back to his wife. She becomes pregnant and simultaneously he learns that doctor s granddaughter is also pregnant. Everyone in the hospital thinks that he is responsible for it. She loses her sanity after Devan leaves the hospital. Vasundhara dies of shock when she hears rumors about her husband. He goes to the hospital to tell the doctor that he is innocent but in a fight which follows he accidentally kills a guy and is sent to jail. Shekhara Menon (Thilakan) is retired income tax officer from Mumbai and has now settled in a remote village in Kerala. He owns some land and a house where he and his three daughters live together and lead a calm, silent and happy life. Menon owns a smaller house adjacent to his own which is given for rent, and his source of income other than agricultural income. Mr. Menon's Pension from service has been blocked due to some unclear issues. Hareendran (Mammootty) is a struggling small-time contractor and comes in as a new tenant to the rented house. Hareendran is constantly put under unwanted troubles by his aide Balachandran (Sudheesh), who convinces Hareendran to help people in trouble. His experience with Balachandran has made Hareendran a selfish man and he presently is least concerned about other people's problems around him. But the things take a change after Menon goes absconding leaving three daughters alone in the house. Hareendran the selfish tenant quickly decides to vacate the house to avoid unwanted troubles. Even though selfish and unkind outside, the good-hearted Hareendran cannot stand the harsh difficulties forced to be faced by the girls in front of his house and rest of the story is about how only Hareendran (Oral Mathram - the only person) steps up to help the girls. more»
