Kamal Mehra (Sudesh Kumar) lives in the village with his mother Shanta Mehra (Lalita Pawar) and younger sister, Sharda (Rajshree). They are poor and his mother has to mortgage her house in the village in order to send Kamal to the city for further education. She expects him to pay off the mortgage once he gets a job. Kamal gets a job and returns to the village with a wife Mona (Shyama), who is considered too modern for the village. When Kamal returns to the city, he stops sending money to his family. The mother and daughter leave for the city when they are informed that Kamal is not well. They are treated badly by Mona, who with her spendthrift habits gets into arguments with Kamal. When Kamal leaves for a job outside the city, Mona has Shanta and Sharda thrown out of the house.\n\nWandering on the streets, Shanta and Sharda collide with Kumar's (Manoj Kumar) car, who takes them to his home. Kamal is an employee of Kumar, but the fact is unknown to mother and daughter. Kumar and Sharda start liking each other and he insists that they stay at his place till the mother recovers. When Kamal returns home, he is upset to see his mother and sister missing. He leaves some money he is carrying for his employer with Mona, and goes off to the village to look for them, but is unable to find them. Mona spends three-fourths of the money Kamal had left in her care, and he has to find a way to return the money. Finally, Kamal unites with his mother and sister; Mona has learned her lesson from her errant ways, and Kumar and Sharda get married.\n\nThere is a sub-plot in the form of Kamal and Mona's neighbours; one is Sunder (Mehmood) and his wife Geeta (Savitri), who is shown as the traditional wife in comparison to Mona. Advocate Raja Shekaram (N. T. Rama Rao) most loyal and respectable person in a village he leads a happy family life with his wife Kamala (Savitri) who is timid and short-tempered younger brother Krishna (Krishna) who involves himself with unnecessary quarrels in the village. Kamala tries to protect Krishna from these quarrels. Kamala's father saves 1 lakh rupees with Nagaraju (Nagabhushanam), the landlord of their village. One day when Kamala goes to Nagaraju's house for collecting her money he asks her to come some other day to collect the amount, on her way back to her home she witnesses a murder done by Nagaraju's acolyte creating fear in her. Meanwhile, Rajashekaram gets into trouble with Nagaraju regarding some land issue on behalf of the villagers and also helps his brother Raghava (Sobhan Babu) to marry without his permission which irritates him. When Kamala goes again to collect her money from Nagaraju, he warns her that he will take revenge against her husband. On hearing this Krishna, who accompanies her gets angry and warns Nagaraju. Angered at this, Nagaraju puts up the false case on Krishna accusing of beating him in his house and surprisingly Kamala also admits to it. Rajasekhar (Sivaji Ganesan) becomes the guardian to his younger sister Radha (Savitri) after their parents death. The brother-sister duo love, care and adore each other and are inseparable. When the factory in which Rajasekhar works is shut down due to a labour problem and he is depressed, Radha gives him 1000 which she had earned and saved by making toys. She advises him to use this money as seed capital and commence his own toy business. The dutiful brother follows his sister s advice, starts a business and in a short time, becomes rich. Anand (Gemini Ganesan) a former colleague of Rajasekhar who earlier helped him to get a job in his old factory, is jobless and approaches Rajasekhar for work. Rajasekhar appoints him in his concern and over a period of time, Anand and Radha fall in love. Rajasekhar, who is very possessive of his sister, gets angry with Anand as he feels betrayed. However, knowing how intensely Radha loves Anand, he arranges for their wedding.After the marriage, Anand, along with his aunt and cousin, move into Rajasekhar s house. Rajasekhar marries Malathy (M. N. Rajam), a doctor, on Radha s suggestion. All of them continue to live under the same roof and several misunderstandings arise. Anand s aunt uses every opportunity to widen the rift between Malathy and Radha and Radha and Anand. Unable to witness Radha s troubles, Rajasekhar moves out of the house with his wife, Through Radha, Anand s aunt serves a legal notice to Rajasekhar, demanding a share in the property for Radha. Malathy files a counter petition and the property is attached by the court, pending resolution. Unable to see Radha s sufferings, Rajasekhar withdraws the case. Still the families do not unite. Radha delivers a girl and Malathy delivers a boy. After her child s birth, Malathy goes abroad for further studies, leaving the child with Rajasekhar. Unable to cope with the separation from his sister and to have peace of mind, Rajasekhar goes on a pilgrimage for several months. He returns on Diwali day and goes to meet Radha, but is denied entry by Anand s aunt. While going back, he saves a little girl from getting burnt by fire crackers and in the process, loses his eyesight. He is hospitalised and Radha rushes to the hospital to see her brother. Rajasekhar learns that the girl he saved is none other than his niece. Unable to cope with his inability to see them, he dies; Radha too dies holding his hand. The duo becomes an epitome of brother-sister relationship. In the shadow of their deaths, the children unite and seek their heavenly blessings. more»
