The basic injustice at the core of Gangvaa is the way the landed classes take advantage of ordinary village folk. Early on in the film, a work crew finds a pot full of gold coins, and a suitably mustache-twirling zamindar (Amrish Puri) confiscates them to add to his already massive wealth. Enter Gangvaa (Rajnikanth) to save the day; Gangvaa kills Zamindar and his goons. Gangvaa puts together a band of the men who had suffered under the Zamindar's tyranny. Together they hang out in the wilderness and perform Robin-Hood-esque raids for the sake of vigilante justice. At some point Jamna (Shabana Azmi) encounters Gangvaa and is smitten. Then a village girl accuses Gangvaa of rape, and Jamna is enraged it is here that she gets down to find the truth. It turns out that the rape was actually done by a totally different guy named Gangvaa (Raza Murad), and righting this wrong wins Jamna back for our hero, but makes him a new set of enemies that he spends the rest of the film fleeing from. Kunjoonjamma Thomas (Padmini) is a widow living in the village all by herself. People always make fun of her because she is grumpy and depressed due to the deaths of her husband and her only child. Children irritate her by ringing her door bell and running away. One day, her granddaughter Girly (Nadhiya Moidu), who she had never met, visits her. Initially, Kunjoonjamma does not like Girly, but they soon become close to each other. Kunjoonjamma takes down the door bell, saying to Girly that its only purpose was for Girly's return. Now that Girly is with her, she does not need it. Kunjoonjamma's neighbor, Sreekumar (Mohanlal), falls in love with Girly. One day, Sreekumar's friend, Alexi (Fazil), comes to his house and sees Girly. He identifies her as a girl missing from Delhi, and immediately informs her father (K. P. Ummer) about her whereabouts. Girly had run away from Delhi because she had a brain disease and does not have much time to live. She wanted to enjoy the rest of her life. When her father comes to take her back to Delhi for an urgent operation, she refuses to go, claiming that even the doctors are not sure whether the operation will be successful. Her grandmother mixes sleeping pills in soup and gives it to Girly, and her father takes her to Delhi while she is unconscious. The movie ends with the ambulance slowly fading away into the darkness. Lathika is a working single mother of a son named Jagadish. She moves to a big city to give birth to the child, and her mother passes away in the shock.Back to present, Lathika meets Arjunan, who is now her boss. She and her best friend live together in a hostel. One day Lathika's son contracts fever and is hospitalised. He is moved from the common ward to a private room by Arjunan. Latikha rushes to the room and is taken aback to see first Arjunan and later his mother arrive to take care of her son.One day by chance her ex-lover (cousin) Sreekumar finds out about Lathika's tribulations after he left for the Gulf, and in anger he beats up Arjunan. Sreekumar apologizes to Lathika and asks her to attend his own wedding. Lathika returns to her hometown and reunites with her aunt and grandmother.
