Lateef (Nawazuddin Siddique) is a middle-class youngster whose dream is to become a doctor. But as fate would have it, he gets caught in a drug raid where he simply happened to be present unknowingly. He is jailed and released seven years later, after which his whole life and his future are ruined. Meanwhile, ACP Sawant (Mukesh Tiwari) wants to wipe out drug peddling but has to face many obstacles from the corrupt minister (Akhilendra Mishra) and drug mafia Zafar Dongri (Murli Sharma). Brahmhdutt (Dilip Kumar), Premchand (Shafi Inamdar) and Mushtaq Ali Khan (Anupam Kher) have been the closest of friends. Against his wishes, Brahmhdutt's daughter Sonu marries a poor man Indrajeet Sabharwal, who is already married to Radhika and has a son Vijay, from the latter. Vijay takes off from home and grows up to be a dreaded Don in the city (Govinda). Indrajeet is given the post of a manager in a steel factory owned by Brahmhdutt and Premchand. Indrajeet first exterminates Premchand and indicts Brahmhdutt for the murder. Brahmhdutt is packed off to prison. Indrajeet now takes charge of Brahmhdutt's business empire and throws the latter's wife Sujata on to the streets. Not satisfied with the ill-gotten wealth, Indrajeet now wants to marry Premchand's only daughter and legal heiress Mohini (Madhuri Dixit) in order to usurp more wealth, but when she spurns him, he hires Vijay to wipe out her existence, little knowing that they are in love with each other. Brahmhdutt, in the meantime, completes his term in jail and on release sets about to reform Vijay. Jai Tilak belongs to a Rajput clan loyal to the kind and just king. However, the Maharaja's wicked son Shamsher Singh usurps the throne by killing the king. Mangala, a fellow clanswoman, too, loves Jai. Shamsher kidnaps her and tries to rape her causing her to fall to her death. In retaliation Jai kidnaps Rajshree.
