"Neelakantan (Mohanlal) is the heir to the well-known Mangalassery family. He squanders away his father's largess and good name, but is loved by the people who know him well. He has been the arch-rival of Shekaran of the Mundakkal family since childhood. During a minor ruckus, one of Neelakantan's aides accidentally kills Shekaran's uncle (Janardanan). This incites Shekaran to plan to avenge the death of his uncle. Meanwhile, Neelakantan offends Bhanumathi (Revathi), a talented Bharata Natyam dance graduate, by forcing her to dance in front of him in his house. In retaliation, Bhanumathi quits dancing and curses Neelakantan for desecrating the art so dear to her. Later he feels regretful and helps her family in many ways and tries to persuade Bhanumathi to take up dancing again, but she doesn't budge. Meantime, Neelakantan visits his widowed mother intending to bring her back home, but she passes away after revealing a terrible secret; that he was born of another man, out of wedlock. This fact crushes him, and only Bhanumathi finds out this secret when he curses drunkenly (at the car of his deceased ""father"") that the ancestral heritage which he is proud of, is actually not his. She is surprised by the vulnerable side of Neelakantan. He visits Banumathi at her home to persuade her to take up dancing again, only to be refused like before, telling him that she will resume dancing only after his death. That night while returning home from the visit, Shekaran and his aides ambush (by hitting him with a car from behind) and injure him seriously after also inflicting several wounds with swords and wooden sticks. Neelakantan survives the attack, but his left hand and right leg are badly injured and as a cure he undergoes Ayurvedic treatment to rejuvenate his legs. It is during this time that Bhanumathi falls in love with him (she is also regretful for having cursed him, feeling a bit guilty that the attack was somehow related to her curse). Neelakantan convinces Bhanumathi to dance and he arranges for a dance event for her at Delhi. He refuses to marry Bhanumathi considering her future, but in the end she and Warrier (his elderly right hand man) persuade him to do so. Neelakantan tries to forget all the past events and his rivalry with Shekaran, but Shekaran is not satisfied and wants to defeat Neelakantan in front of the whole village. For this he kidnaps Bhanumathi and forces Neelakantan to take blows in front of the public during a village festival organized by the Mundakkal family. Meanwhile Neelakantan's friends rescue Bhanumathi and after this Neelakantan mauls Shekaran badly and cuts off Shekaran's right hand, claiming ""Shekeran, I want to live peacefully..."" so that he will not again come up with revenge later. The story is set in a village where Roopa (Zeenat Aman) lives with her father, the village priest. As a young child, the right side of Roopa's face & neck were burned by a pot of boiling oil, leaving part of her face disfigured. Henceforth, Roopa keeps her right cheek hidden under the cover of her Sari. Despite the terrible accident, Roopa remains religious and goes to the village temple daily, singing hymns and devotional songs. The protagonist Rajeev (Shashi Kapoor) is a dashing engineer who arrives in the village to oversee the operation of a major dam. He abhors anything that is ugly. He hears Roopa's religious singing and meets her, but somehow doesn't pay attention to her disfigured side, and falls in love with her. He then asks her father permission to marry her. After the wedding, he discovers the truth, and thinks that he was cheated and forced to marry someone else, at which point he disowns Roopa and drives her out of the house. Roopa decides to meet him at night, using a veil to hide the charred side of her face. Rajeev spends his days hating his wife, and his nights loving his mistress, not knowing they are both the same woman - Roopa. During one of their nights together, they make love and Roopa gets pregnant. When Rajeev finds out that his wife is pregnant, he suspects her of infidelity and still refuses to believe this his "mistress" and wife are one and the same. In the movie's climax, a terrible storm ravages the village, breaking open the dam which Rajeev had come to build. In the swirling waters of the flood, Rajeev realises how shallow he had been, and saves Roopa from drowning. more»

Rudra Bhupathi a dictator of an estate, treats his entire villagers as slaves. Vikram a young and energetic guy enters to the estate who always faces against Rudra Bhupathi's wickedness and gets closer to villagers. Usha Rudra Bhupathi's only daughter also likes Vikram's attitude and both of them fall in love. A mad woman Bharathi roams all over the estate without recognizing herself, one day Vikram comes to know that mad woman is his mother and there is some suspicious link between her madness and Rudra Bhupathi. Meanwhile, Shishupal grandson of adjacent estate owner comes from foreign and he wants to marry Usha. Shishupal wants to remove Vikram from his way, so he plans an attack on Vikram in that quarrel Bharathi is injured and gets her memory back. Vikram asks his mother actually what happened then she reveals their past. Vikram's father Pratap Rao (Ranganath) was a forest officer who always comes in between to the Rudra Bhupathi's illegal activities in the estate, that why he killed him and also tried to kill Bharathi and Vikram in that attack Bharathi is injured keeping Vikram in safe-zone, but she lost her memory. Listening to all this now Vikram decides to take revenge against Rudra Bhupathi. At the same time Shishupal rapes an innocent village girl Gowri and keeps the blame 0n Vikram, everyone believes it including Usha because Gowri lost her conscious and not able to recognize the person who raped her. Usha gets ready to marry Shishupal, at the time marriage, Rudra Bhupathi comes to know that Shishipal double-crossed him, who is a cheat and not the original grandson of the estate owner. Simultaneously Gowri comes to conscious and reveals the entire truth and sacrifices her life to protect Vikram. Shishupal and his men attack Rudra Bhupathi and villager's and kidnaps Usha, Vikram protects her and sees the end of Shishupal even Rudra Bhupathi admits his mistake and movie ends with the marriage of Vikram and Usha. more»
