The film opens and ends with jail sequences. In both scenes the hero (Bharath) is seen behind the bars. The happenings from his release and his re-entry to the jail make the whole film. The hero, who comes out of the prison, puts his sister's life on track through his heroics and goes back to the prison as a martyr. The protagonist was put behind the bars when he was ten years old. He killed his father's "keep" who made his mother's life a hell by exploiting her to cajole his 'keep'. He went to jail and his father turned an aimless vagabond. The boy's elder sister, who disowned him when he was sent to jail, grew up and got married to a businessman (Biju Menon). The innocent girl (Khushboo) is living in a fool's paradise, believing the man, who is actually an anti social element. However, she need not worry about anything. The hero, who is now 25, has come out of the jail. He gets a job in his sister's house without revealing his identity. He unearths the shady deals of his sister's husband and reforms him and puts his sister's life on track. Meanwhile he finds his ladylove (Kajal Agarwal).

But the father escapes with no major mishaps, but loses contact with his only son, who he forces to run away from the baddies. The father sends Giri to protect his son Raj. Giri grows up and relocates to small town with a family of three : Raj's wife, son and sister. The family doesn't know who Giri is and Raj's family has trouble with the local meanies. Raj's sister becomes pregnant by the son of the villain, the man responsible for the massacre that separated father from son. Now Giri will turn the clock back and return to avenge the death of his near and dear ones.

Having starved severely, Periyar found no other better way than to enter a choultry disguises himself with the appearance of a Brahmin wearing a thread on his bare chest but it is found out and is disgusted with life in Kashi. Periyar returns and joins his father's business and later becomes the Chairman of the Erode Municipality which he gives and joins the freedom struggle and becomes the President of Congress party of Madras Presidency and later quitting and joining the Justice Party and the formation of the DMK. His role in the Anti-Hindi agitation and Vaikom struggle. His second marriage and the formation of the DMK. It covers his entire life till death.

Malati (Rati Agnihotri), a young girl from a middle-class family meets Suresh Ray (Mithun Chakraborty), who is the son of a well-known lawyer Dayashankar Ray (Danny Denzongpa). After dating each other for some time, she finds that she is pregnant. When Suresh refuses to marry Malati, and she decides against aborting the baby, her parents throw her out and disown her. Left alone, she decides to take Suresh to court. She is supported in this fight by Shakuntala (Rekha), a lawyer who works for woman's rights, who also has an illegitimate daughter from Dayashankar Ray. The case gets much publicity and public support, and the judge rules in Malati's favor. At this point however, Malati refuses to marry Suresh and decides to raise the child on her own. In the meantime, Shakuntala dies of a heart attack, and Malati promises her to take care of her daughter, and carry on Shakuntala's work. Years later Suresh and his wife (Ranjeeta), now married for some years and still childless, run into Malati again. It turns out that she has been raising her son all by herself, and he has turned out to be a very talented and well-adjusted young boy.
