Jeevanandhan "Jeeva" (Vijay) is a very rich young man. Although his parents (Chandrasekhar (Sivakumar) and Srividya) want him to settle down, he goes to another city to do his MBA and stays with friends. During this time, he meets Mini (Shalini) and they fall in love. She reciprocates his feelings, but trouble comes in the form of her tyrannical trio of brothers (James (Radha Ravi), Thomas (Thalaivasal Vijay) and Stephen (Shaji Khan)), who are overprotective of their little sister and take an irrational dislike to Jeeva. They show hostility towards Jeeva and conflicts arise within the households and when the couple decide to elope, they go to Kesavan s (Charle) hometown and his father (Manivannan) refuges them before the proposed wedding. Jeeva tries to convince his motherone last time and in vain. On the day of the wedding both realise they miss their families. They decide to return home, relinquishing their feelings, and the families are happy and take them back. Jeeva s mom wants to see Mini so that she can get a better wife for her son and goes to meet Mini. Mumtaz is a village girl whose family is killed in communal riots. She moves to Mumbai with her uncle, the only family member she has left. They are desperately poor and her uncle persuades her to become a bar girl at Chandni Bar. This is merely temporary, he promises, until he gets a job. Mumtaz is a shy girl who loathes the work, but she forces herself to dance and flirt. However, the uncle doesn't keep his promise; he lives on her earnings, drinking them away, and never gets a job. He adds one final, unforgivable crime to the list when he gets drunk and rapes her. By this time she has caught the eye of a gangster called Potiya Sawant. When she tells Potiya what her uncle did to her, Potiya decides to "defend her honor." Potiya shoots the uncle. Mumtaz, bereft of any male protection in the dangerous slums, marries Potiya. She is determined to make the best of things. She leaves the bar and stays home to raise her two children, whom she carefully protects from the world of prostitution and gangs. However, her world unravels again when Potiya is killed. She has to return to the bar to support her children. In the end, she cannot protect them from their sordid surroundings. Her son becomes a killer, her daughter becomes a bar dancer in her turn, and Mumtaz turns to prostitution in a tragic attempt to save her son. more»

Kannan (Sivakarthikeyan) is a carefree youth who assists his father (Ilavarasu) in his construction business. He spends time with his friends (Parotta Suri, Singam Puli and 'Deiva Thirumagal' Kishore). Kannan is in love with his neighbour Revathy (Athmiya), whose father and uncles are the most dreaded goons in the village. They are both childhood friends. He gets a shocker when he decides to reveal his love to Revathy. Her family has arranged her a marriage with an influential man. To avoid the arranged marriage, Kannan's friends from Mumbai (Sreenath and Chams) kidnap Revathy. There is a twist in the tale. Revathy declares she has no romantic interest over Kannan. "He is just a friend", says the girl at first. But later reveals that she loves Kannan too, so much so that if others knew it, it'd be a problem to him and prove to be a risk to his life.Meanwhile, the bride-to-be's family searches frantically to find their girl. They get hold of Kannan and his friends. Revathy and Kannan are separated. After two years, Kannan returns from Oman after having worked as a Site Engineer there, to meet his love. He meets her with avidity and they talk for a while when Revathy asks him to leave immediately, for fear that her father would harm him. Kannan, still a passionate lover, asks Revathy if they could marry, now that she's not married to anybody else.
