Ram Singh (or Ramu) (Dev Anand) is a good school boy. One day he brings a penknife which his classmate has forgotten. He shows it to his mother. He becomes Dakhu Ram Singh. Police are after him and in the process, he has to leave the city and go to another city to escape the police. In the train, he steals and he gets an accomplice in Charodimal ( Radha Kishen). In the new city, he sees a girl Shiela (Usha Kiron)won the swing and cuts the swing and Shiela fall in the river. He pretends to save her and takes her necklace. They he comes to know that her brother is the CID inspector who is after him. So he entices her and marries and starts to continue his profession of stealing. His true identity is found by the Inspector who tries to arrest him. Shiela who is pregnant comes to save him and faints. The Inspector comes to attend fainted Shiela and Ram Singh escapes. She delivers a son. Ram Singh comes to see the son and Shiela leaves him. After being expelled from high-school, Kishu returns home to work with his disapproving truck-driver father, Someshwar, who bends the law, bribes the police to transport hand-grenades packed in egg-boxes. The movie begins with two young kids who fight each other in a marriage hall who grow up to be Krishna (Prasanna) and Ramya (Laila) . They meet after two decades during a college cultural meet and again lock horns with each other. Fate brings them together in Chennai after a few years, again fighting with each other. Meanwhile, a series of events forces Krishna's close friend Aravindh (Karthik Kumar) to come to India from the USA to get married. His parents arrange his wedding with Ramya. Ramya, who decides to get married to help her younger sister's love, displays herself as a passive character who accepts whatever the life partner feel is right. On the contrary, she is bold, active, independent and assertive in nature. Knowing this, Krishna tries hard to let her true character come out. However, Aravindh stalls the wedding plans and returns to the USA as he finds Ramya as a person who does not think on her own and not independent. Mistaking Krishna for influencing Aravindh, Ramya locks horns with him. Meanwhile, Ramya's mother (Revathy) ends up in hospital and Krishna comes to the help of the family and eventually develops an affinity for Ramya which turns into romance. Enters Aravindh now with a decision to marry Ramya. The climax was expected after the closeness between Ramya and Krishna.
