When Indra comes to know the reason for her belated arrival, he flies into a rage and curses Rambha to be transformed into a statue during the day in the very place that had so transfixed her. In that hamlet, there lived a young simpleton who was always the target of everyone's taunts and tricks. A group of mischief mongers lead him blindfolded to the statue and performing a sham ceremony, declare that the statue is his wife. Rambha too falls in love with her gullible husband. Murugesh (Murali) also known as Murugan, a musician, comes with his troupe in a village. The village belle Chellakili (Sivaranjani) waits for her lover Murugan who was missing while her cousin Duraipandi (G. M. Sundar), a brute, wants to marry her. Murugesh finally reveals that he is her long-lost lover Murugan and also discloses the reason behind his missing. In the past, Chellakili's father (Vijayakumar) wanted to marry his daughter with the family friend and orphan Murugan. Whereas Yasodai (C. R. Saraswathi), Chellakili's aunt, wanted to marry Chellakili with Duraipandi. She managed to beat Murugan and she expelled him from the village. Later, Murugan became a singer in a music band but he cannot forget Chellakili. Duraipandi and Yasodai are now aware of Murugan's return. They then reveal Chellakili's love affair to her father without disclosing Murugesh's real identity. Her family then meet the Sadha Swamy who causes Chellakili to forget her love. Now, Chellakili rejects Murugan's love. What transpires later forms the crux of the story. more»

In the film, Vanisri plays the dual role of Banu and Chandra, cousin sisters who look alike. They switch places for a few days to escape from each of their family problems. How their lives change after the switch forms the rest of the story. One of the identical cousins, Chandra, is dark and old-fashioned, whereas the other, Banu, is modern and fair, who takes life easy and meets the poor but well-educated young man (Muthuraman) who falls in love, but she does not respond at first, and disappointed he commits suicide. She realises her folly later, and in the final climax, she too commits suicide. The dark girl, Chandra, is ill-treated by her stepmother (Sundari Bai), and her loving father (Subbaiah) loses money in business and also his job, and after getting his job back thanks to his daughter, he dies later of heart failure, leaving the daughter orphaned. Soon, the twin cousins switch identities, which is the main crux of the story, and how the problems are solved forms the second half of the film, with a somewhat predictable climax. more»

Nirmala (played by Nargis) is in love with Barrister Rajindra Singh (played by Pradeep Kumar) and they have plans to get married soon. Pandit Kedarnath (played by Pran), a pimp, is now following her in order to get her for himself. But coincidentally, she meets Rajindra again. The lovers get married secretly. But then Rajindra leaves for Britain, leaving behind pregnant Nirmala. Rajindra's parents don't accept Nirmala and her child and throw her out. Nirmala gives birth to a baby boy. Her conditions worsen and she is not able to earn her living. She hence gives away her son to Dr. Renuka Roy, a kind woman, and goes into prostitution for earning money. The story turns when her son grows old to become a Public Prosecutor and his first case is of Nirmala, a prostitute, who is now charged with a murder. more»
