Bombay-bred Narain goes to a village, where he meets and falls in love with a village belle, Yashodhara. She also is attracted to him, and both get married. After their marriage, both go to live with Narain's parents, brother, and sister-in-law, Lalita, and her son, Sonu. Yashodhara gets close to Sonu and starts to spend all her time with him. This raises some concerns with Lalita, which results in some acrimony. Tragically, Sonu passes away, leaving Yashodra devastated and depressed. She gets pregnant and gives birth to a baby girl, but cannot get Sonu out of her mind. Her depression gives way to insanity, as she keeps on seeing Sonu in every child, and as a result she is institutionalized. Narain has taken to alcohol in a big way and drowns his sorrows and frustrations day and night in a drunken stupor. As a result, his daughter is adopted by Lalita and his brother, without knowing who her real parents are. Years pass by, her daughter, Asha, has grown up and is herself a mother of a baby boy, and settled in the U.S. Asha arrives in India for a visit and the entire family assembles to visit Yashodhara. They find her holding a piece of log, covered in a blanket, singing to it as if it where Sonu. It is here that Asha finds out who her real parents are, and it is here that she will be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice. more»

Raju, a farmer lives with his sister Janaki, whom he adores. Venkatappaiah, a rich man plans to marry off his son Dr. Raghu to his brother-in-law Ganapathi s daughter Rani, an advocate. Raghu refuses to marry her and Rani takes a vow to marry him at any cost. Raju and the mean Venkatappaiah are at loggerheads. Venkatappaiah plots against him with his Man Friday Kethanna and sends him to jail. Orphaned, Janaki is saved by Raghu and by circumstances marries him. Raju is released from jail and seeks revenge against Venkatappaiah, but finding his sister there as the daughter-in-law leaves the place. Venkatappaiah and his wife Kantham throw the pregnant Janaki out and tell Raghu that she eloped with someone. Janaki delivers a baby. A childless couple Venkatramaiah and his wife adopt the child. Janaki jumps into the river to end her life. Raju saves her and determines to set things right. Its a fun masala romp with generous helpings of the recommended masala allowance. There is fiesty Hirni (Zarina Wahab) who wears backless cholis and sells liquor while her smoking hot boy-friend Jaamlia (Vinod Khanna) languishes in prison. Then there is the college-going Rekha (a very subdued Neetu Singh) whose attachment to Hamlet is exemplary -- she goes to bed with it! Her hair goes from shoulder length to waist length in the space of a few moments. Perhaps that is why a visiting drunkard -- Anand (Shashi Kapoor) -- falls for her and stalks her in a bordering-on-harassment song sequence. Mahendranath (Bharat Bhushan) is a rich and lonely old man with a smarmy new manager Dilip Singh (Prem Chopra). Mahendranath had a much younger brother Rajen (the annoying kid from Fakira) - a wilful brat who left home one day, never to be heard of again. Instead of heaving a sigh of "good riddance", Mahendranath keeps hoping Rajen will return. Taking advantage of the old man's hopes, Dilip hires an unemployed youth (Raza Murad), to impersonate the lost-and-now-grown-up Rajen. Mahendranath happily hands over all his property to "Rajen" and is promptly murdered by Prem. "Rajen" himself is bumped off later.Things get more complicated with new twists and thrills at every turn. Someone is sending Dilip threatening letters about Mahendranath's murder. Sapna (Sharmila Tagore), flying back to India from the USA is involved in an airplane engine "flameout". She loves poetry, in particular the work of a poet called Ujjwala. Unable to distinguish between the poet and the poetry, she sets out on a journey to meet the poet in a place called Phulwari. Sapna believes that Ujjwala is her dream man. Her wealthy father, worried by her distraction consults a psychiatrist who pronounces that Sapna needs treatment and must be sent to his clinic for an extended period of time. Running away from home, in a beautiful red MG TF (probably a 1954 model) she comes across Sunil (Shashi Kapoor) working on his Jeep (one of the early right-hand drive versions that Mahindras produced). A couple of accidents later they find themselves in a luxurious Mercedes Benz tour coach (possibly an O 321 H - with a rear engine) and their journey of exploration begins. Faced with obstacles, raised by greedy people who want to get the informant's reward announced by Sapna's father Randhir Singh Chauhan; and going through some comic as well as dangerous interludes the screen couple arrive at the climax on their way to Phulwari. Sunil is doing his best to escort Sapna to Phulwari. How Sapna reconciles her love for Ujjwala, who she has only met through his poetry and Sunil's unreciprocated love for her makes for an interesting denouement. more»
