The film is a light-hearted comic love story, wherein Sunil Dutt falls in love with a 'phool' (flower) Waheeda Rehman but has to impress her four uncles, the 'kante' (thorns) of the title. Innocent and honest Bajrang (Mehmood) drives a taxi and helps everyone. He is devoted to his daily customer, another kind-hearted gentleman, Mr. Sadhuram (Om Prakash) who is a bank employee. One day a man claiming to be a childhood friend of Sadhuram, named Sher Khan (Pran), enters their lives. His motive is to rob the bank where Sadhuram is employed and blame Sadhuram for this. He manipulates Sadhuram into accepting him and moves in with him. He borrows a large sum of money from Sadhuram, and also manages to duplicate the bank's safe's key, and steals the money. The Bank Manager (Nasir Hussain) notifies the police of the robbery and Sadhuram becomes the prime suspect. In a panic, Sadhuram, who comes into possession of the money that Sher Khan has stolen, flees with the police on his tail. The patriarch, Suryashekhar Chattopadhyay is a deeply religious person and a man of firm principles. He treats the predictions of the horoscope like axiomatic truth, realizing little that such predictions can often be misleading. His obduracy distances him from his only son, Alok, who refuses to put up with his father's unbending attitude to the horoscope. Alok marries outside his caste, denounces his horoscope, and leaves home to settle abroad with his wife. Suryashekhar's wife; an accomplished and educated lady, is reduced to being a mute witness to all this and never protests against her husband's whims and harsh decisions. She bears everything with quiet, resigned dignity. Their grandson, Arijit comes to stay with them through a strange turn of events, and they are overjoyed. But, by then, Suryashekhar has decided that he will die in Benaras to rid himself of the eternal cycle of rebirth. He decides to check in at Moksha Bhavan, a house where people come to die. There Arijit meets Kasturi, a Bihari woman, whose mother-in-law awaits death. Her husband, Shyam cannot father a child, but blames her and abuses her which she refuses to accept. Malati (Rati Agnihotri), a young girl from a middle-class family meets Suresh Ray (Mithun Chakraborty), who is the son of a well-known lawyer Dayashankar Ray (Danny Denzongpa). After dating each other for some time, she finds that she is pregnant. When Suresh refuses to marry Malati, and she decides against aborting the baby, her parents throw her out and disown her. Left alone, she decides to take Suresh to court. She is supported in this fight by Shakuntala (Rekha), a lawyer who works for woman's rights, who also has an illegitimate daughter from Dayashankar Ray. The case gets much publicity and public support, and the judge rules in Malati's favor. At this point however, Malati refuses to marry Suresh and decides to raise the child on her own. In the meantime, Shakuntala dies of a heart attack, and Malati promises her to take care of her daughter, and carry on Shakuntala's work. Years later Suresh and his wife (Ranjeeta), now married for some years and still childless, run into Malati again.
