My Husband's Wife is a film about an Indian Sikh family settled abroad after the grandfather Kartar Singh (Prem Chopra) migrated there forty years ago. He started his career as taxi driver and when his son grew up, his business flourished with revenue running into millions. However, he remained attached to his country India. His culture, sentiments and emotions made him get his son married to a Punjabi girl (Rati Agnihotri), who gave birth to a beautiful son Pawan, but unfortunately, Kartar Singh's son dies young. Kartar Singh gives the best of education and amenities to his grandson, but Pawan turns out to be a Playboy even though he respects his grandfather as well as his mother. The culture of the west hypnotizes Pawan. Seeing the circumstances, Kartar Singh decides to get his grandson married to an Indian Punjabi girl (Rakhi Vohra), thinking that a girl from India will show him the path to living life as an Indian. The grandson starts handling the family business with sincerity and does well. But his wife from Punjab shakes him up in terms of his preference for western culture. He goes back to his earlier girlfriend (Alisa Khan) and starts drinking heavily. The emotional drama between the grandfather, mother and wife starts from here and culminated in an emotional saga between the hearts of two women torn for a single man.

The second wife of kind-hearted and generous Amirchand Bhargav is Durgadevi Bhargav (Nadira), who is exactly the opposite of her late husband. She rules over her household, along with her brother, Makhanlal (Madan Puri), with an iron hand, and also over her step-daughter, Shanti (Vidya Sinha), who she treats worse than her servants. Due to her brutality, there is always a dearth of servants in her household, and hence most of the work must be done by Shanti. Her other daughter is Roopa (Moushumi Chatterjee), who is bad-tempered and spoiled. When a former employee of Amirchand, Ratanlal (Shreeram Lagoo) approaches Durgadevi for marrying her two sons to her two daughters, she humiliates him and turns him away. Unperturbed by this, he asks the assistance of his two sons, Ram (Sanjeev Kumar) and Laxman (Shashi Kapoor), so that the marriages can take place, and at the same time, Durgadevi and Makhanlal be taught a lesson. Both the sons readily agree to do this, and Ram goes to Durgadevi household as a servant to woo Shanti; while Laxman poses as a wealthy playboy to woo Roopa. But Makhanlal and his wife, Jwala (Shashikala) want Roopa to marry their jailbird son, Chander (Ranjeet), and will not stop at anything, including abducting Durgadevi herself, to pave their way to wealth.

After graduating college, he finds a job in the advertising Department of the rich Champalal and his daughter, Geeta, who is responsible for this Department. Also, he meets on Kishore, Lalachands son, who could not stand Vijay during common school. While Vijay and Kishore fight Geetas heart, Lalachand wants to increase his fortune. He makes the ignorant Champalal his investor and manufactures ungeteste skin creams and fake painkillers. Want to impress Geeta with fast success, Kishore the cream market, without having to wait for the test reports. However, already the first customers come with their complaints. Also, the editor of a local newspaper, Moni Chatterjee, is present and interviewed Vijay. This confirms that the cream was already introduced before waiting for the test report in the market. After the article in the newspaper and this represents company a bad publicity for Champalal, Vijay is made by him of speech. Because Vijay is accused of having told the truth, Vijay quits his job, since this would otherwise breaches against his principles. Much to the annoyance of Geeta, who is already in love with the honest man. Soon, Vijay finds a job at Moni Chatterjee, who was impressed by his honesty. Due to his sincere reports, Vijay is very popular so that turns a helpless blind man to him someday. He maintain his child had died as a result of a painkiller. Vijay is the thing on the ground. His track ultimately leads him to Lalachand, threatening with death, if ever an article about the toxic pain killers should appear. But Vijay felt afraid of the truth and gets into some turbulence. Finally the truth prevails and Lalachand is discharged while Champalal apologizes Vijay. Also Geeta practitioner love finds a Happy ending.
