Bindubasini was an upper middle class rural Bengali lady and was the only child of her parents. So she was brought up with lots of love and affection. Tarak, a middle class educated person selected Bindubasini as his brother s wife. His brother Madhav was a brilliant student and scholar. The relation between Madhav and Tarak was a close one. Madhav respects his elder brother and tries to follow his footsteps. But sometime Bindubasini misunderstood it due to her over passionate psychological structure. Slowly she began to look after Amulya. Amulya began to call her mother. Suddenly Amulya became the world of Bindubasini. All the love and affection of Bindubasini was reserved only for Amulya and he also reciprocated by following her every instruction. At this point of time A cousin sister of Tarak and Madhav came to their residence and started to interfere in their daily life. But their child was a spoiled one. So a rare conflict of perspectives was introduced in the family and they go through some collisions and disputes. It s a fantastic example of emotional twists and turns in Bengali middle class families.

During the decade of 1970, a company decided to recruit 100 stuffs for their vacant positions. But the number of unemployed youth was so much that almost 30000 people applied for that job. Here Mrinal Sen neatly introduced some characters who actually portrayed the scenario in which they were going through. A journalist actually recorded all reports direct from applicants when they were queued up for the collection of forms. Some of them were victimized by black marketers, some families were facing labour problem due to company lockouts. But everybody was standing for the collection of form for those vacant positions. The pressure was increased day by day, at last the management had to call the police to tackle the situation. Suddenly few posters were seen on the sides of the roads and pavements. Those 30000 applicants became united. Some phone calls also conveyed by them. At last people organized an uprising and symbolically they protest against the system of ruling.

Anish Mitra is very highly educated rich and famous personality. But somewhere along the line, he has a loneliness. He is at the junction of middle and the old age. Having almost everything in life Anish does not want to pursue a family life. In the times of leisure, he traveled to the other places to break the normal regular routine. So he decided once to go to Digha, basically a tourist spot at a seashore. There he meets a young girl called Tuku. She likes him at her first sight. Anish shares some great moments with them and thus they became closer and started a friendship but very soon both Tuku and Anish realizes that they are in a relationship. Anish especially has some problem with the relationship due to a huge age gap. This story is a classic example of the fact that any relationship cannot be bound by the boundaries.

A woman named Subhra Sarkar, received some ugly treatment from the ruling British Government. She was brutally tortured. After the independence, Mohit Moitra is accused for doing the leftist activities and at the same time Bijoy Ghosal betrayed him. This is a tragic story of the people who sacrificed their life for the struggle for independence.

Bhimkanta, the night guard of a government office commits suicide leaving behind his pregnant wife and children in a miserable condition. His wife labanya writes to his office asking for his dues. Bhim s friend Dashu takes up the responsibility of going to the office on Labanya s behalf but the office in question is a government one and the trouble starts thereon. Nobody seems to have any interest about work, nothing seems to move, and nobody lends an ear to Bhim s repeated appeals. Red tapism and politics only adds to the woes of Dashu who goes to all directions like a shuttlecock as everybody passes the buck. Years go by but Bhim s file rots away unsolved as the insensitive employees keep themselves busy with lottery, newspaper, saree business, and soccer games. At some point of time, devastated Dashu loses his mental balance. An officer rapes Labanya and she is forced to resort to prostitution. Her views change and all her expectations vanish. That is why when she ultimately receives the paycheck she tears it and throws it away.
