Ambernath a well-educated Sanskrit pundit was different from his childhood. The way he thought and described everything was quite different from others. His master Jagannath Tarka Churamoni loved him a lot and after his death, Ambernath took his place. In such a situation Bani the daughter of local zamindar and Ambernath met. After few days, they got married. Bani were very skeptical about her husband and they were not happy with their relation. Later Ambernath left his wife and stayed alone. In the meantime, Bani also understood the affection and love she had for her husband. She came to know about life and commitment. One day Bani heard that Ambernath was very ill and he stayed in a lonely place. Bani rushed there and put her every effort to make him healthy. Later they came to know each other and lived happily.

"Bhutnath comes to Kolkata in search for a job and starts living with a devotional man named Brojorakhal. He sends Bhutnath to a Brahma named Subinoy Babu who takes a prompt liking for Bhutnath and employs him in his sindur factory. Subinoy Babu s daughter Jaba shares a bitther sweet relationship with Bhutnath. Brojorakhal introduces Bhutnath to the youngest bahu of the zamindari household where he was employed. He calls her bouthan and brings for her a box of sindur as per her request. It is now where Bhutnath gets a chance to look at the lives of the zamindars closely. They lived a brash lifestyle, splurged, enjoyed life to the fullest and never cared for their wives. Bhutnath witnesses an instance where his bouthan pleads her husband to not go anywhere and he replies in return stating he will only stay back if she sings, dances and makes him drink. Bouthan requests Bhutnath to bring alcohol for her and he implies. In her mad attempt to keep her husband by her, she gets addicted to alcohol. Bit by bit the zamindars lose their estates, money and consequently power. One day when Bouthan and Bhutnath are on their way to the mandir, a group of people attack them and knock Bhutnath unconscious. When he gets back his conscience, he does not find Bouthan. Many years later when Bhutnath is summoned to demolish the same estate, he recollects his old days spent at the house. The workers dig and find a skeleton decked with jewellery. Bhutnath recognizes it at once to be his bouthan s skeleton."

Choto Bakulpurer Jatri shows how innocent people were made victims of violence. Dibakar, a humble factory worker sets out with his wife for his marital home in Choto Bokulpur as his wife was disturbed after hearing the news of unrest and violence there. She wants to assure that her parents are safe amidst the revolution of the peasants which the police and army were trying hard to suppress. As they reach the outskirts of the village they are stopped by few men who start questioning them. They are thoroughly searched and their luggage is thrown open to check if they are revolutionaries. They get no evidence against them in their luggage. But, when Dibakar is searched they find a paan wrapped in a piece of paper bearing an advertisement lauding the brave efforts of the revolutionaries and condemning the tortures of the suppressors. Despite Dibakar s repeated assurance that he isn t a revolutionary they kill him mercilessly and thus ends an innocent life.

Raikamal narrates the story of Rai Kamal, a devotee of Lord Krishna. Rai Kamal and Ranjan are childhood sweethearts. When Ranjan grows up he wishes his desire to marry Rai but his parents are against this match as they are Brahmins and Rai Kamal was a low caste Vaishnav. Ranjan's father requests Kamini, Rai' mother to convince Rai to sever the relationship. Rai's mother leaves the village with Rai. Rashik Das, a minstrel accompanies them to Nabadweep. After Rai's mother's death she is forced to marry Rashik despite their huge age gap to stop the people from gossiping about them. But, they are never able to share a normal relationship of a couple. Rashik leaves Rai and goes away as he knows that Rai can love only Ranjan. Rai gets to know that Ranjan had left the village with Pori and converted into a Vaishnav. Circumstances again bring Rai and Ranjan together. Ranjan takes her to his house. Ranjan tells her that he had been waiting for her all the while and proposes to marry her. An ailing Pori also requests Rai to marry Ranjan but Rai leaves his house and takes to the streets once again. Rashik keeps following her like her shadow to shield her from everything without her knowledge.

Harihar Ray lives in Nichindapurwith his family. Nothing is going well for Harihar as he gets a job as an accountant at the zamindar's treasury but does not get any remuneration. In the course of time, he is blessed Apu, his son. His lack of means and various circumstances drive his daughter to die of pneumonia. This proves a turning point in his life and he with his family, leaves for Benaras seeking a better life.
