The story is set in a suburb of Madurai. Suryan (Bharath) and Chandran (Bharath) are twins. Suryan, the elder of the two is soft spoken guy who works at a local lending library and he falls in love with Manimekala (Bhavana), daughter of Namasivayam (Mahadevan) the local politician-don and MLA. Chandran, the younger one, works as a mortuary assistant in the local government hospital and he's one among Namasivayam's bad guys who are in charge of his election campaign. Chandran is romantically linked to a local girl,Tamizhselvi (Sandhya). Namasivayam comes to know about his daughter's love affair with Suryan and he orders to some killers to kill Suryan. Kola Kolaya Mundhirika film is about wealthy man delegates a trusted subordinate to hide priceless diamonds in a set of chairs before he is murdered by a trio of criminals out to get their hands on the same. Twenty years later, the hunt for the chair resurfaces as the trusted subordinate reveals partial information about the treasure to the protagonist, Krish (Karthik Kumar). The villainous trio, also privy to this information, follow Krish and Veni as they set out to find the diamonds. A hilarious cat and mouse chase ensues as the main characters follow clues, traveling from city to city, assuming different personalities to find the chair with the diamonds, while being chased by the quirky, nosy police inspector Mathrubhootham (Jayaram). Muniyandi (Bharath), a third year college student and the darling son of Muthumani (Ponvannan) comes across as an average fun-loving guy. Matters become colourful when a demure young daughter, Madumitha (Poorna) of a local bigwig, Ramaiyya gives first preference to the members of his caste. Madumitha makes a coquettish play for all of Muniyandi's friends, but hits it off with him first. Following a heated skirmish in the caste-dominated college elections, the two fall in love. Or so you think. Also part of the mix is Sorimuthu Ayyanar (Vadivelu), who raises some laughs as the local witch-doctor, complete with bells and saffron cloth regalia. But everything goes topsy-turvy when, once Madumitha's marriage is arranged, she turns around and says that she was never in love with Muniyandi in the first place. Furious, the guy thrashes her with his slippers and sets fire to her father's coconut grove. It is little things like these that set this movie slightly apart from others in the same genre; the hero and heroines come across as genuine characters, angry, sad and sorrowful. Madumitha is no slinking pathetic thing either; she gives back as good as she gets. 15 years after an accident in which Bala's parents both died, Bala returns with wife, Revathi, and son, Anand, to his hometown. They decide to stay a couple of nights in the massive house that he grew up in. As he spends a few days in the house and recalls his memories, Anand- who has a disability to speak- sees movement around the house. But he cannot tell anyone what he witnesses. Soon Revathi who suffers from claustrophobia, sees that the house is haunted and so tells Bala that they have to go back to Chennai. Anand enjoys being in the presence of the ghosts and doesn't find any problem. Problems come up between the couple that they had never thought of when they had love marriage. Soon Revathi discovers that they did not come on holiday but in fact, came to escape some rowdies that Bala owes money to. This is when Bala's classmate and business partner, Jeeva, arrives to stay with them. His company had borrowed 40 lakhs from a rowdy and over the months it had increased to 50 lakhs but he is unable to pay back any money as his agent, who was supposed to give him 2 crores, runs away and is nowhere to be found.
